Phantasm II 1988

1h 37m Action Rated 3.0 out of 5

Evil Dead-esque horror action with some body horror and a little humor (chainsaw vs. chainsaw battle). Explosions go boom. Fun weapons.

The version that I watched was gray and hazy with low contrast. The film quality looks really bad. The first film didnโ€™t explain everything and thatโ€™s fine. The sequel also doesnโ€™t explain much and some plot elements get MORE confusing and complicated.

Special Effects 1984

1h 46m Drama Rated 3.0 out of 5

Ambitious Hitchcockian thriller that might have worked better in the hands of a better director. Jonathan Demme?

The overdubbing is so extraordinary bad that it constantly pulls you out of the movie. At first I assumed that it was โ€œintentionally badly dubbedโ€ like when DePalma has a campy, low budget film within the film. Unfortunately, the flaws in Special Effects seem completely unintentional

Trancers 1984

1h 17m Science Fiction Rated 3.5 out of 5

Awesome premise. Lots of fun. Like the soundtrack.

The first act is great, but then it losses momentum. The wristwatch is fun at first, but then becomes a โ€œget out of jail freeโ€ card for the writers. Slow boring chase scenes. Hackneyed cliffhanger ending.

Amityville: Mt Misery Road

Rated 1.0 out of 5

Digital tools have made it easier than ever before to make and distribute independent films. This is not necessarily a *good* thing.

There are about 5 minutes of Blair Witch-esque screaming in the woods at night while spooky music plays. Those 5 minutes were the only time that โ€œactingโ€ occurred and that scene was somewhat entertaining. Thatโ€™s the only positive feedback.

This reminds me of Birdemic: Shock and Horror (2010) in its tacky tastelessness and lack of attention to basic details. Mundane and repetitive. One of the worst films Iโ€™ve ever seen.
