Phantasm II

Action
Rated 3.0 out of 5
Evil Dead-esque horror action with some body horror and a little humor (chainsaw vs. chainsaw battle). Explosions go boom. Fun weapons.
The version that I watched was gray and hazy with low contrast. The film quality looks really bad. The first film didnโt explain everything and thatโs fine. The sequel also doesnโt explain much and some plot elements get MORE confusing and complicated.

Really influential. Love the soundtrack and the no wave aesthetic.
Third act was a little slow and rambling.

Ambitious Hitchcockian thriller that might have worked better in the hands of a better director. Jonathan Demme?
The overdubbing is so extraordinary bad that it constantly pulls you out of the movie. At first I assumed that it was โintentionally badly dubbedโ like when DePalma has a campy, low budget film within the film. Unfortunately, the flaws in Special Effects seem completely unintentional

Awesome premise. Lots of fun. Like the soundtrack.
The first act is great, but then it losses momentum. The wristwatch is fun at first, but then becomes a โget out of jail freeโ card for the writers. Slow boring chase scenes. Hackneyed cliffhanger ending.

Amityville: Mt Misery Road
Rated 1.0 out of 5
Digital tools have made it easier than ever before to make and distribute independent films. This is not necessarily a *good* thing.
There are about 5 minutes of Blair Witch-esque screaming in the woods at night while spooky music plays. Those 5 minutes were the only time that โactingโ occurred and that scene was somewhat entertaining. Thatโs the only positive feedback.
This reminds me of Birdemic: Shock and Horror (2010) in its tacky tastelessness and lack of attention to basic details. Mundane and repetitive. One of the worst films Iโve ever seen.

Did NOT need to see *actual* footage of a giraffe being shot, bleeding out, shot in the head at close range, and then vultures come can pick out its eyes.
As far as the rest of the film, rambling without a central thesis.

I like this more than Bergmanโs more abstract films. This one feels like 90% reality and 10% magical realism. Thereโs something Lynch-ian in the ghosts and the ghost stories that I really enjoyed.

The best part of this is the uncertainty if this moment is real or a dream. I love the psychological drama of that aspect.
Freddie is goofy. Boozy mom is not great at acting. Too many jump scares.
