This intimate ethnographic study of Voudoun dances and rituals was shot by Maya Deren during her years in Haiti (1947-1951); she never edited the footage, so this “finished” version was made by Teiji Ito and Cherel Ito after Deren’s death.

I would have liked to see how Maya Deren would have finished it as but she did shoot the film and I think that is perhaps the most interesting part of it. There is no doubt she had an eye for dance and movement and here the dancing of the religious ceremonies are top notch, some truly great dancing. The human movement and it's attachment to the other world, something Maya seemed very interested in. Just one CW warning, there is animal sacrifice.
